ILS 7th graders and revolution

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia, the director of Vladivostok’s Arseniev Primorsky Region Museum, Viktor Shalai, visited ILS and told our 7th graders about the sources of these events and their consequences for all Russian citizens, including those in Vladivostok.

During the 40-minute talk, the students turned their thoughts to pre-revolutionary times, when the peasants – the breadwinners – left their families to go to war. They thought back to people working 12-hours shifts at the nation’s plants and factories, with not enough to eat and little time for sleep. And they thought about the years of civil war, when the people of Russia fought against each other.

By the middle of the talk, the students could clearly imagine the civilian fighters who emerged after the revolution.

The students were particularly interested in the examples given from the lives of real people who lived in Vladivostok in 1918 in times of great need and amidst the chaos of civil war and strife.

“The time our students spend with professionals gives them the opportunity to gain new knowledge and to feel the spirit of creation,” explains ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “I am convinced that systematic meetings with guests from the ‘Cognition’ project will make a direct contribution to the personal growth of many of our students.”
