ILS students find out how Christmas is celebrated in France

ILS students learning the French language had a lesson devoted to how the Christmas holiday is celebrated in France. For the lesson, their teacher Yelena Poddubnyak was joined by Alliance Française-Vladivostok representative Lia Andre.

The students brought traditional French Christmas dishes, which they prepared themselves: a Christmas yule log cake and a gingerbread Christmas tree, along with various other cakes and buns. Thechildren also made special Christmas cards.

“Christmas is the main holiday of the year for French families,” explains Yelena Poddubnyak. “People always exchange greeting cards with wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Preparing the Christmas yule log cake and decorating the tree are also important traditions.”

In addition to learning about French Christmas traditions and their sources, the children enjoyed tasty holiday treats.

“Learning about the traditions and culture of a country whose language you are studying is essential,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “Immersion in the native speakers’ world makes the learning process even more interesting.”
