Students in grades 5 and 6 created more than 100 ceramic models of microorganisms recently in ceramics class. The idea for the project came from biology teacher Yelena Zelikson, who explained: "Handsome models made with your own hands - wouldn't you agree that this is an excellent way to learn more about an object? With support from ceramics teacher Svetlana Globina and technology teacher Lyubov Shatova, the students created wonderful educational models."
The students spent two weeks making their models of various microorganisms by studying pictures, deciding how best to attach the details, and then kilning and painting their creations.
"It was very interesting work," says section 5M2 student Jonas Derks. "My task was to create an animal cell, and I think it was mission accomplished."
"Even though biology is not my favorite subject, creating different forms of plant cells was very interesting," adds section 5M1's Leonid Dronov.
The results of the students' efforts are on display on the school's 7th floor in the chemistry and biology classrooms.
"This was an excellent creative project," notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko, "and truly interdisciplinary, as it combined biology and art. Although biology is not the favorite subject of all those who took part, each of them now has a better understanding of the structure of life's building block.
