“Russia through our eyes”: ILS international students give readings of Russian poetry

During the “Russia through our eyes” poetry reading in the ILS Assembly Hall, our international students read poems by Mikhail Lermontov, Aleksandr Pushkin, Konstantin Simonov, Angia Barto, Bella Akhmadulina, Robert Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Vysotsky and Marina Tsvetayeva. The competition included students from grades 2-12.

“Students from Japan, China, South Korea, and the Netherlands showed us their mastery of the language and oral presentation,” notes Valentina Kovaleva, who teaches Russian as a Foreign Language at ILS and serves as head of the International Center. “This format, as part of their Russian language program, is an excellent stimulus for our students’ creative activity.”

ILS currently has more than 40 international students from ages 6-18, with Russian language as one of the mandatory subjects for all of them.

“I was very moved by Aleksandr Vertinsky’s poem ‘Children’s town’,” explains 9th grader Jung Dokyung of South Korea, who finished 2nd in the competition for older students. “There are many wars now in our world where children suffer, and this poem captures their plight perfectly, even though it was written in 1946.”

“For the competition, I chose Robert Rozhdestvensky’s ‘For you through the year’,” says 12th grader Kim Da-eun. “I have been studying Russian for four years, and I have started to understand its melody and the particulars of intonation.”

In addition to the prizes awarded by the judges, the participants also received certificates from the winners at last year’s competition, 12th graders Yang Gitae and Jung Gawon.

Following the poetry reading competition, two students from section 7M1 – Cho Yezi and Kim Haein – gave a presentation called “A journey through Korean fairy tales”. They have translated into Russian and English 20 well-known Korean fairy tales on a wide range of topics including love, friendship, bravery, travel and various others.

“Our main goal was to improve our Russian language level through translation from Korean into Russian,” explains Haein.

“Our choice of fairy tales was not random,” says Yezi. “First, we would read a Russian tale and then chose Korean tales on similar topics. We also made illustrations for each story.”

“This is a very serious and important project,” says Yulia Filatova, who teaches Russian as a Foreign Language at ILS and is the advisor for the girls’ project. “Literary translation has its own challenges and particulars, as you have to taken into account the specific nature of a particular genre.”

“Nearly 30 students took part in the poetry reading competition,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “It is very important for us that each international student finds his or her studies at ILS interesting. To achieve this, we use a diverse approach: the students take field trips, visit exhibitions and theatrical events, learn poems, prepare interesting projects, and conduct research. All of this makes it easier for them to get used to the Russian world while enriching their vocabulary.”
