ILS 8th grader debate in literature class

Students in section 8M3 had a very unusual literature class: a debate, organized by teacher of Russian Language and Literature Galina Korotokonozhkina.

Guests at the class included ILS Deputy Principal Marina Artemenko, management teacher Aleksei Bogdanovich, and tutor Maria Nemtsova.

The students divided into groups and chose the topics to be discussed. For example, the boys debated on the topics of sport and cybersport.

"Cybersport is underestimated in Russia," argued Daniil Bolsunovskii. "That's why there's such a bias against it in the country and why the idea itself is misinterpreted. You can win big money in cybersport tournaments in other countries, without the risks associated with traditional sport."

"If you take an intelligent approach to traditional sport and don't ruin yourself with endless training and a poor diet, you can achieve great success," countered his debate opponent Makar Dega. "What's particularly important is: sport makes you stronger in body and spirit."

"Being able to debate effectively is a very important skill in modern society," notes Galina Korotokonozhkina. "At speech development classes, students polish their mastery of dialogue, learn how to speak in public, and discover ways to defend their views with sound arguments.

"In addition to being able to write well, students should also be able to speak well," says ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. "In a debate, they need to be able to make convincing arguments, get their bearings quickly, and listen carefully."
