"City of the Future": the theme of this year's sphere of activity game for ILS 10th graders

The school’s sphere of activity game for this year is about ways of organizing Vladivostok’s urban space. The organizers of the business game are Maria Nemtsova, economics teacher, candidate of economic sciences; Valentina Kovaleva, teacher of Russian language and literature; and school psychologist Aleksei Pezhemsky.

“This year we decided to choose the very relevant and much-discussed topic of organizing the urban environment,” explains Maria Nemtsova. “In 2019, Vladivostok was given the status of ‘Capital of the Russian Far East’, and residents expect the local government to work actively to improve the city. We watched videos of well-known bloggers who, one might say, have become experts in organizing a comfortable urban environment in Russian cities, and they agree that Vladivostok has work to be done.”

Seven teams of 10 graders are working on the City of the Future project. The themes chosen by the students include organizing road and pedestrian traffic, comfortable leisure activities on the coast, and landscape design.

"Three of the teams will be doing projects on organizing road and pedestrian space, which confirms that the game theme was properly chosen," notes Valentina Kovaleva. "We are working to ensure that team work becomes a reality and, possibly, to launch new city projects. For the final session, where the teams will present their results, we plan to invite experts on the topics that the students have chosen."

I hope that our project will be useful not only for us, but also for people who are responsible for the quality of roads in the city,” says 10th grader Kirill Trudov. “Traffic jams and a shortage of parking lots create problems for drivers, who are forced to park their cars in residential areas, as well as for residents, who would like to see a lawn near their home and breathe fresh air, rather than car exhaust.

“The sphere activity game is an important part of the educational process,” explains ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “Each team is formed by randomly selected numbers and includes students from the different 10th grade sections. By doing the project homework and sessions, the students develop various soft skills, such as the ability to negotiate, how to work together to solve problems, and how to be polite even in the most heated disputes. In a word, they learn constructive communication while performing an important task.”
