Long-term ILS project with EcoStar continues, batteries sent for recycling

In keeping with a fine tradition, in the first academic quarter ILS transfers to EcoStar batteries collected by students, parents and teachers during the previous year.

EcoStar Technology, ILS’ partner for the “Recycle batteries – save the planet” project, loads these environmentally dangerous items into a special protective container.

“Batteries are categorized as Class II dangerous waste and sent to a special storage area in Tomsk,” explains Ivan Vakhrushev, who is deputy director of EcoStar’s Primorye division. “Unfortunately, the situation with recycling leaves much to be desired, and the Tomsk zone is the only site in Russia with permission to recycle used batteries.”

This joint battery-recycling project was launched at ILS in 2017, and our students have actively supported this and other “green planet” initiatives, such as exclusion of plastic cups and use of energy-saving light bulbs.

“We try to help our students become responsible and aware, people who care about our environment,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “At ILS we take environmental education seriously. After all, the condition of our planet tomorrow is in our hands today: will it be green with fresh air and varied scenery, or will it be ruined by unrecycled waste generated by human beings?”
