ILS joined UNESCO in celebrating International Literacy Day, with a theme this year of “Literacy in the world of digital technology”. Students in the 5th-8th grades participated in the event, with 8th graders from group 8M1 giving a presentation in English on the topic.
“The growth of digital technology and electronic means of communication have resulted in people all round the world using short phrases and abbreviations,” the students noted, “which has led to lower literacy levels, as people gradually carry these habits over into their personal contacts.”
“Our school has been a member of the International Literacy Association since 2014,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “We believe it is important to explain to students that literacy is vital to modern people, particularly in our fast-changing world.”
