“Winter School” was memorable for ILS students, as well as their teachers. ILS high school students were treated to a lecture in General Linguistics by Professor and Doctor of Pedagogical Science Elizaveta Khamrayeva – Director of the Inter-University Center of Bilingual and Multicultural Education at Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University (St. Petersburg).
Professor Khamrayeva told our students about sign systems, different areas of linguistics, stylistics, speech culture and lexical issues. The students listened with great interest and asked questions with enthusiasm. They asked Professor Khamrayeva how many languages she knows and why she considers the constant dying out of little-used languages tragic in a world striving for globalization.
In addition to giving lectures, Professor Khamrayeva served as lead judge for a poetry reading competition, with ILS international students reading Russian poems they had memorized as Stage One of the Olympiad for Russian as a Foreign Language.
