February 4-11 is Science Week at ILS, with students attending lectures on geography, biology, economics, information science, physics, chemistry and intellectual games. The program also includes field trips to the Vladivostok Oceanarium and Academy of Sciences, as well as project defense by ILS 9th graders.
The lectures on “Greenhouse effect: its causes, risks and prospects” for sections 8M1 and 10A are given by Viktoria Semal of the Far Eastern Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“We are living at a time when greenhouse effects are quite tangible,” notes Viktoria Semal. “Our snowless winter here, and the anomalous snowfalls throughout Russia are a clear example of climate change.”
Why do natural disasters occur? How are these related to human activity? How is our climate affected? What steps are being taken to ensure a comfortable life on Earth? All of these questions are addressed in the lectures for our students.

Students in grades 3-4 took a close look at dinosaur extinction during a detailed lesson with Doctor of Biological Science Anatoly Drozdov from the Maritime Biology Institute of the Far Eastern Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“Science Week is an important event for our students,” notes Deputy Principal for Science Marina Artemenko. “The topics presented by lecturers from the Academy of Sciences were interesting and very important. For science week, we tried to include all the subjects our pupils are currently studying along with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-life situations. Our goal is not specifically to train future scientists; rather, we try to help our students become responsible people, who treat the place where they live with respect.”
