Walking tour-lesson “Views of buildings” full of surprises for ILS international students

Yulia Filatova, who teaches Russian as a Foreign Language at ILS, decided to reinforce the topic “Views of buildings” with a walking tour of Vladivostok, finishing at Krestovaya Hill, which offers a wonderful view of Golden Horn Bay and the various buildings on both sides of the bay.

“During our walking tour, we saw a great variety of buildings, including one-story wooden houses built many years ago along with different kinds of modern buildings,” explains 10th grader Cho Sein. “During the excursion, we learned about the architectural features of each kind of building.”

The walking tour was spread across two lessons and finished at Popular Alley not far from the school. The students were quite surprised by one very old house they saw, where people still get their water from an outdoor well, particularly as the house stands amidst modern high-rise apartment buildings.

“The excursion was very interesting; we had never seen Vladivostok from such a high place,” says Yun Dokyung. “I liked this lesson very much.”

Yulia Filatova plans to give her students the task of making a presentation on the history of buildings in Korea, including the evolution of building construction, and finding out what kinds of buildings Russian students like.

“Creative lessons outside the classroom are very popular among our students,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “It enables them to enrich their vocabulary, particularly as they must interact with native speakers.”
