Teachers - candidates of sciences give fascinating lectures to ILS students during Science Week

The Science Week program included classes and lectures by ILS teachers with scientific degrees, along with lectures and master classes outside the main curriculum.

“We want our students to know that their teachers have devoted a significant part of their lives to research, and that their scientific work has allowed them to defend their dissertations,” says ILS Deputy Principal for Science and Scholarship Marina Artemenko. “The school employs candidates of biological and physical and mathematical sciences, as well as candidates of economic and chemical sciences. They are pleased to share their knowledge and extensive research experience with students.

One physics teacher, Alexander Shavlyugin, who has a Ph.D. in physical and mathematical sciences, during a lecture on “Quantum computer: scientific opportunities and reality,” introduced tenth graders to the evolution of counting devices.

“Since ancient times, people have been trying to come up with ways to count quickly,” Alexander explained. “First there were nicks on stones and wooden boards, then knots, and eventually people invented the slide rule and the abacus. In the middle of the 20th century, we had the first electronic computer – the ancestor of modern computing devices.”

For 9th graders, Maria Nemtsova, who holds a Ph.D. in economics, prepared a lecture on “Behavioral economics: how are the things for which Nobel Prizes are given used in real life?”

“For many of us, economics is not easy to understand, although, as I have learned today, this is one of the important sciences of the modern world,” says Julia Tarunova of section 9M3. “Some economists use tricks, thanks to which we feel the need to buy goods that we really do not really need.”

Sophia Okhotina, candidate of biological sciences, also conducts interesting classes with her students, who devote a lot of time to experiments and studying the laws of fundamental genetics.

“At my lesson, the students divided into teams and composed tasks and crosswords for rivals,” explains Sofya. “Now they should remember the dominant inherited traits."

"Not only the high level of education of our teachers is important to us, but also their dedication to their subject,” notes ILS Principal Olga Shevchenko. “Their depth of knowledge and creative approaches ensure the success of the lessons and inspire the children’s interest in the subjects studied.”
